Gran Canaria Wellness Blog Trip

Kindly invited by Gran Canaria Wellness Association,  I got ready to enjoy in first person the benefits of Spa treatments and Thalassotherapy of the best hotels of Gran Canaria. So, after taking the plane that would carry me to Gando, I put my foot on the island, in which I  had not been for several years and which I wished fervently to return having left many friends and known landscapes. The Association put at my disposal and for  my convenience in transfers to a super and very correct driver, Paco, who at all times was aware of any of my needs. From these lines, my gratitude. In a little less than half an hour, I was already coming to Lopesan Villa del Conde Resort

Great, stylish, comfortable, healthy, succulent, luxurious...If I think about it,  I would have to seek a qualifying adjective for this fantastic hotel and its incredible thalasso, because it is unique. Even from the distance it  already leaves no one indifferent, for its clear Canarian-style and architecture with a reception that successful and affectionately copy Agüimes Church, with its whitewashed walls and the black stone of the area. So, we get into the building to find ample space and high-rise, where is located a wide reception after which awaits us, smiling and helpful, a great team of people that will satisfy all our desires even before we can ask.

You feel suddenly the need of sitting in the pleasant lobby which opens up to the apse of the building, to listen to some music or simply be envolved by the warm light that floods the space.

While we have done the check-in, our luggage has come to the room.

We know that an essential part of a trip is the hotel and especially the room, in which we feel at home and that it should cover all our needs. The Lopesan Villa del Conde expectations are more than satisfied, since the wide room welcomes us as soon as we get in, with its warm colors, comfortable and large bed, a space where you can enjoy a chat in the comfortable sofa and a terrace always flooded of the fragrance of the garden and the nearby sea.

The common spaces are open to nature and the sun, giving prominence to Canary species that provide a more than grateful shade to guests of the hotel. The huge swimming pool, quiet and with the original idea of an area with white sand not to lack nothing in our moment of relaxation and tanning, extends almost to the coast, separated from the sea by a promenade that leads from Meloneras to Maspalomas. And precisely in that space won from the small cliff, and under the promenade, the jewel of the hotel is located, the magnificent Corallium Thalasso, a temple dedicated to the cult of relax, beauty and wellness.

Already from the reception, with the friendliness and attention of the staff, we get ready for what we will find. Wrapped in a soft and comfortable bath robe and slippers  we are going through each one of the areas that conform the installation. From the sauna, Turkish bath or showers of herbal essences, passing through gravity pool of high saline density (as if you were in the Dead Sea), massage cabins or fabulous waterbeds. Already at this point our body has lost much of the stress and has earned relaxation and calm.

We stopped a moment to get our strengths back with a light, nutritious and very tasty snack. A delicious fruit juice that accompanies each mini ciabatta with salmon or serrano ham sandwiches and a few dried fruits of accompaniment, ending with a probiotic yogurt with honey and figs from the island.

And to finish the day, the epitome of hedonism. We went to the Ocean View Suites, where awaited a private ocean view Jacuzzi-pool and several integral treatments for us to enjoy: body wraps in aloe vera, which consists of a peeling with sea salt, aloe vera and moisturizing cream from the same plant,  then spreaded with warm aloe gel and wrapped in a blanket of heat while the fantastic professional team provides us with a quite relaxing facial massage

Once finished the treatment  we can only lie on the super hot beds before returning to our room, totally relaxed, hydrated and longing to try the various options that the Corallium Thalasso offers us.

But that will be the next day, because first of all we have to feed the body, and for that purpose Lopesan Villa del Conde has an army of cooks and waiters who prepare and serve tasty and varied dishes, giving a lot of importance to Canary Islands products, such as cheese and pastries, in a varied and assorted buffet.
For connoisseurs, hedonists or for anyone who wants to treat themrselves as gods or take a break, Lopesan Villa del Conde Resort  is the place to be, where the onlyimportant thing is to pamper yourself and enjoy a unique place, in the beautiful island of Gran Canaria.

But before dinner, a surprise awaited us. Accompanied by a Super Guide provided by Gran Canaria Wellness, we enjoyed an instructive stroll through the coastline area that stretching from Meloneras to the dunes of Maspalomas.

With a beautiful sunset behind us, we were traversed what nowdays is the newest part of the tourist coast with its large luxury hotels, shopping malls and high level leisure for  a visitor of great quality who appreciate the charm and tranquility of the area. I did not know the place, so it was a surprise to find a site, the Punta Mujeres, literally in the middle of my way.

This place was the residence of several aborigin families who built a dwelling made of boulders  and sand, with an opening to the south to allow ventilation. Little more that the bases are, but it is really nice to be able to imagine the life of the canaries who lived here and feed from the sea.

We continue the trip and find the beautiful Faro de Maspalomas, inseparable from the dunes and the sunset image, marine sentry and symbol of the South of the island.

At his time, don Juan León y Castillo, while he promoted the construction of the lighthouse, knew that it was called to endure and excel far above any buildings in the area and that it would serve as a guide to all vapors that pass by the Islands, from Asia, Oceania and America, as well as for the fishing boats that operated in the Canary-Saharian Bank. With its 58 meters harmonizes perfectly with the House from whereit  rises, place of residence, at the time for the lighthouse engineer, keepers and their families, who acquired a place of residence under unique hygienic and comfortable conditions. It is curious to see a dock next to him, but the explanation is simple.

At that time, the roads from Las Palmas to Maspalomas were practically dirt roads, absolutely contraindicated for transport of heavy material, so it was built the spring to allow the discharge of all stone and needed timber for the stand construction, as well as for the continuous supply of paraffin that feed the light from the lighthouse. Light that should compete with the wonderful sunset that is viewed from this unique place in the entire canary territory and that we had the fortune to enjoy  in a pleasant and instructive walk.

The next day more surprises came.Very early, waited for me the beautiful Nira, responsible of the Association and Diana, a super driver who guaranteed, with German punctuality, that I was at the time indicated in the right place. After a pleasant car talk, we reached the first destination of the day.By no means could imagine that in Mogan, once the charming village of fishermen and today one of the multiple sources of Gran Canaria tourism, i could find a different and unique in the Canary Islands attraction and that was as exciting as the Yellow Submarine. Since we see it from the distance, with its striking color emerging from the water, we imagine ourselves emulating the protagonists of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and knowing we are fortunate as maybe it is probably the only opportunity we have to travel in a submarine.

When we step on its deck we already will enter the film, as the Nemo of 21st century prepare to see and be seen  under twenty meters of water. So we went to the heart of the machine, close the hatch and take seat facing one of portholes waiting for the spectacle taking place before our eyes.

A selection of classical music, with the Swan Lake as its main theme, accompanied  the diving of the submersible that will reach a depth of between 20 and 30 meters.Little by little, and even though the water is a little murky because of recent rain falls, we are seeing the bottom and as we are going away from dock  it appears more inhabitants of the waters  like "salemas", sea-breams, red snappers, as "galanas" and "fulas".

At one time, come in hordes hundreds of fish to enjoy the food provided by the submarine, and then accompany it, approaching very close to portholes where for a moment we are observed, as if we were inside a fishbowl as a distraction for them. But not only the fish come to our meeting, since a group of divers who seem to enjoy the spectacle of the gadget that slips quietly by the bottom, watch us pass by while megaphones make announcements such as those that occur in a submarine: lowered depth, pressure, emergency simulation... everything to make us feel increasingly more involved in the aquatic adventure. But the best is yet to come. Suddenly, a metal towers appear before our eyes. They are the remains of the hull and structure of Cermona II, a fishing boat of 32 metres length that has become home for many marine species.

While we look at the wreck, the music surrounds the moment and we almost want to stay down forever when we heard the order to emerge.Gradually we go up, with the quiet purr of the electric motors (to avoid damaging the environment) until we reach the surface.

When we left, as if we wake up from a dream,we  look at the sea and this is when we realize that we have shared space with a world of wonders that await us everytime we want to go down to delight us with them the unique yellow submarine. A unique experience.A small walk around Mogan until we reach the car and... to the next destination.Immediately we reach the fabulous Sheraton Salobre
The doubt overwhelms me. To see the Sheraton Salobre hotel as a masterpiece of the architecture in the landscape or as the grand hotel which usually holds  Starwood, full of comforts, original spaces and able to provide a unique and incomparable stay.

I had the immense fortune of visiting the hotel thanks to the invitation of Gran Canaria Wellness, that collects under one brand the best centres belonging to the wellness area, consisting of thirteen Spa centers and Thalassotherapy integrated in top quality hotels and a center of Thalasoterapy. Sheraton Salobre hotel is without a doubt the most original hotel in the area and if I think it well could say that of  the Canaries .The enclave is certainly one of the two secrets, arid, mild relief and with some spectacular views, much resembling the landscape of the American deserts and which no doubt inspired the architects of the hotel.

And that's the second secret, architecture. Commissioned the design to the prestigious Allen Philp, Arizona (http://allenphilp.com/index2.html) the unique and undeniable condition was the respect for the environment and the total integration in the landscape. The result could not have been better.Constantly it comes to mind the image, and structure of the beautiful hotels of the mountains of North America alternating with the states of New Mexico and Arizona, creating a warm environment full of light. This image is reinforced by the use of a native stone from the Valley of Ayagaures. The large windows that look directly to the green areas and the two golf courses, high ceilings and open spaces, the almost absence of corridors and mostly clear and exquisitely planned decoration represent a 360 degree turn in the design of existing hotels.

And it is that decoration, in charge of the prestigious interior designer Marta Sanjuán García-Triviño, stands out for the combination of earthy colors with metals and stone, not setting aside more daring materials as the plexiglass or the rusticity of a simple hallway made with staves of wood. Everything has been designed to provide guests an environment full of comfort and without stridency that can break the sense of calm and relaxation.

And that is also perceived in the rooms, where dark woods contrasting with white lingerie or huge tubs with views of the suites in the most harmonic way.

Or the wonderful and unique Sunset Bar, a space apart within the hotel where themain aim is relax in the canarian sun while sipping a snack or a cool drink in a comfortable balinese bed.

After touring the hotel, we take a break to feed the body, so we go to La Palmera to enjoy some delicious croquettes, a fabulous cheese of Valsequillo and a tender and juicy Sirloin grilled.

To finish the day, the staff of the Aloe Spa welcomed us with a warm smile and after showing us the facilities invited us to enjoy them.Once inside, we can decide by revitalising icy showers, the giant jacuzzi, steam bath or the most shocking, the outdoor heated pool with a stylish and a unique design based on the infinity pools of the beach resorts, but with the added value of large jets to massage and jacuzzi beds.

To finish, nothing more simple and relaxing that tasting some fresh apples lying on beds of the solarium, while we prepare to leave, not without great sorrow, this oasis of good taste and well-being.
It was already missing little for the sunset, and we wanted to reach the ultimate destination of the day,  the Bohemia Suites

Elegant, brand new, different, original...Many adjectives come to my head when I think of the visit I made last March to this beautiful hotel, almost newborn, resulting from the successful renovation of a hotel of the 70`s. Outside, the hotel is surprising from the different layout of the balconies and night lighting striking since the sun sets.
A really original glass elevator leads directly to the 360º Lounge, which we'll enjoy and show later. But let us go slowly, since after a warm welcome in the stylish and welcoming reception, the affable staff leads us by various units of the hotel, one with more elegant and more daring design than the previous one. Siam Spa, warm and with a completely Asian air leads us directly to Thailand massage rooms. It's the epitome of elegance, with decor that combines dark furniture with panels of warm colours and lighting with natural light and soft artificial clarity, all this for the customer to be relaxed and ready to enjoy Thai and Balinese massages completing the day inside a Hammam of real luxury.

We continue the tour by the hotel, stopping at places like the charming Saphire Pool Bar, heart of the gardens the pool and the terrace Eleven and Eleven. But, one of the most pleasant surprises provided by the visit is without a doubt the Suites.

We could say that the entire room (and that is only one divided by panels) is a balcony, a view of the sea.Since we opened the front door, the view of the Atlantic Ocean becomes part of the original and carefully decorated rooms.A bed to dream at night inside and another to enjoy the day and the sun on the terrace, with a panoramic view of the dunes of Maspalomas absolutely enviable.Small details dot the stay: a delicious coffee, electronic Apple's next-generation big screen to enjoy a good movie...
The colors are soft and harmonic and induce to rest and relax with the sound of the sea as the only accompaniment. But we continue going up, since on the top floor await two surprises of 360 °.On one hand the lounge which we talked about earlier, with direct access to the street and which has all the advantages to become a reference point for the coolest summer in Maspalomas. The cocktails made with genuine affection and devotion are super, since they have the accompaniment of the kindness and friendliness of the waiters in an environment really comfortable and with a sunset that becomes even more golden when reflected on the nearby sand dunes of Maspalomas.

But if you want to have a delicious dinner, which mixes the exotic Thai cuisine like the delicate soup of coconut with an air of chili and crispy shrimp, with a flavor more Spanish with products stonger flavours like the Iberian "pata negra", potatoes "bravas" pork sirloin and stewed beans, we must undoubtedly go to 360º Restaurant. In this unique space we will enjoy a wide selection of delicious dishes accompanied by selected wines and the most spectacular and wonderful view spanning the coast of Maspalomas and climbing up to the mountains of the heart of the Island. No doubt, Bohemia Suites will become soon a reference of good taste and of the know-how in the catering trade in the South of the island.  I can only wish to enjoy a night with the sound of the sea as a lullaby. Perhaps very soon...
